The Red House - FeatureMore >>
director | co-producer | animation | choreography FormatHD SynopsisA feature length film - set on Waiheke Island and Beijing. Mixing genres of silent film and documentary. In progress. Concept OutlineThe Red House looks at two very different worlds of a Chinese and Pakeha (European New Zealand) couple and the environmental catastrophe that could be our imminent future. Drawing on Alyx Duncan's family migration situation The Red House studies the layers of live in an old house on Waiheke Island which was the family home and an apartment in Beijing, now the home of Alyx's father and stepmother. The Red House provokes thought on issues of conservation, environment, and our place within it. The objective is to weave a real situation – observed rituals of people within their natural setting – with a way of storytelling that is more like a poem. A study of how to create and express presence within location, The Red House uses the toolsets of both documentary, non-linguistic script-based narrative and dance. Three scheduled New Zealand shoots were completed during the summer of 2008-09. The Beijing part of the story is being developed between October 2009 and November 2010. Development is supported with a two month artist residency with Theatre in Motion and Asia NZ in Beijing between April and June 2010.
"The Red House project intends to link different cultures, personal feelings and daily objects in a delicate way, and to construct a poetic space in the film for people to explore with their own affections. It also provides an alternative perspective of the social transition in China from the 80s, dancing with reality on the reflective surface of memory and intuition.
