A Sculptural Installation. Virtual Theatres 2009, Adam Gallery, New Zealand. 2008
BOUND looks at one man’s endeavor to conserve and uphold environmental authenticity. Framed by the myth of Prometheus, the figure of the man is both Prometheus and anthropologist and environmentalist Lee (the artist’s father). It explores the part of the myth, after Promtheus stole fire from Zeus and bestowed it to humans.
Prometheus was banished to a rock on a high mountain and caught in an almost endless cycle of suffering. An eagle came each day and pecked out his liver. This study of repeating and ongoing suffering is mirrored in the mortal contempory body of Lee who struggles to maintain community and ecological coherence on a local level.
This is made as a ‘technical piece’, part of a portfolio of works for Alyx Duncan’s masters in Theatre Arts at Toi Whakaari and Victoria University. Spoken text is written by Lee Stuart and extracts from A.J. Podlecki’s 2005 translation of ‘Prometheus Bound’.
